It offers a wide range of courses across many disciplines including some subjects you won’t necessarily find at home. The campus has an impressive reputation for Marine and Environmental Science – Murdoch was the first university in Australia to offer Environmental Science and the first in Western Australia to offer Marine Science.

Murdoch University is home of the Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Ecosystems, with links to the Western Australian Marine Science Institute (WAMSI). The University also owns and operates the Coral Bay Research Station, located on the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef.

Coral Bay and the Ningaloo Marine Park

Coral Bay, located 1100km north of Perth in Ningaloo Marine Park, offers easy access to the 280km-long Ningaloo Reef. The area features warm waters and clean, white beaches, with the reef forming a sheltered lagoon ideal for fishing, snorkeling, and diving. Situated near the Tropic of Capricorn, Coral Bay lies centrally within the marine park, which stretches from Red Bluff to Bundegi and includes the Cape Range National Park coastline. Declared a Marine Park in 1987 to protect Western Australia’s largest coral reef, the region is notable for its proximity to the continental shelf and exceptionally clear waters. Listed as a World Heritage Area in 2011, Ningaloo Coast supports over 250 coral species, 470 fish species, and marine life such as whale sharks, manta rays, whales, and turtles, making it one of the world’s most pristine and accessible coral reefs.

Program Options

Program Name Early Start Available Credits Notes
Healthcare in Costa Rica – Session 2
Early Start Available: No Credits: Up to 2

Spend Spring Break in Costa Rica, learning about their approach to healthcare over the course of a week that will see you spend time on campus meeting with guest speakers and participating in simulation workshops, and out in the community witnessing policies and initiatives in action.

The course is taught for 30 hours Monday through Friday, morning and afternoon, over the course of one week. Students will be assessed on a reflective diary/essay and a final written exam. All courses are subject to a minimum enrollment of 5 students.

Session 1 and Session 2 students will follow the same itinerary.

Academic Credit & Transcripts

Credit Transfer

As a part of the AIFS Abroad application for semester programs, you will complete a Course Approval Form, which will be signed off by your study abroad office staff and/or faculty at your university.

For J Term/Summer programs, no such approval form is needed; however, students are still responsible for ensuring credit can be brought back from their overseas program.
In any case, we recommend getting additional courses approved in case you need to change courses while abroad.

Overseas universities do not use the credit system employed by American institutions. AIFS Abroad students must make special arrangements to transfer credits, but since AIFS Abroad courses are given at recognized universities or the AIFS Abroad Centers (which are transcripted by Fairfield University), there usually is no difficulty in arranging transfer credit toward U.S. degrees provided the proper procedure is followed.

European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)

Many of the European institutions that AIFS Abroad works with award credits under the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). ECTS enables cooperating institutions to measure and compare a student’s performance and facilitates the transfer of credits from the European institution to the U.S institution.

Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)

Language levels are defined according to the CEFR and will be listed on your transcript on completion of the program. CEFR organizes language proficiency into six levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) which can be regrouped into three broad levels according to the needs of the local institution: Beginner: A1, A2/U.S. Level 100; Intermediate: B1, B2/U.S. Level 200-300; Advanced: C1, C2/U.S. Level 400

Transcripts

When you complete your program, an official transcript is sent to your home institution directly from AIFS Abroad or the host university. Another official transcript may be retained by AIFS Abroad in Stamford, but this is not the case for all programs. Please contact transcripts@aifs.com to find out how to request additional transcripts.

Generally, your school should receive your transcript 60 days after completion of the program. (Cannes Semester programs, Perth, Sydney, Dublin, Limerick, and Wellington Programs exception: Transcripts issued and retained by the host universities. Transcripts for the Cannes Semester programs are issued by Chapman University.)

Transcripts may come without an English-language translation, so participants will need to organize translations with their home university.

Academic Records

Credit assessment methods in overseas universities may not be comparable to those in U.S. universities. Grading may involve exams, papers, individual projects, class discussion or some combination of these. Although academic institutions abroad may grade on a variety of scales, admissions counselors and registrars at U.S. institutions are familiar with international grading systems and can convert grades.

Course Selection

AIFS Abroad Program Advisors are available to assist you in the process. The following procedure is recommended:

Read course descriptions for the selected program and select courses. Obtain approval from your academic or study abroad advisor for the preliminary courses selected. Final approval of credit transfer for completed courses is at the discretion of the Registrar or appropriate official at the home institution. Students must ascertain that courses taken meet their individual academic program requirements. Recommended credits in this catalog are based on 15 classroom hours per semester credit.

I would absolutely recommend this program. The trip has been such a positive experience. Wonderful program!

AIFS has a lot to offer. The more I talked to American students from other programs, the more I realized that AIFS was clearly the best choice

This program opened my eyes to a culture and society I knew very little about. I made great friends and had a fabulous time during the process. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

AIFS Abroad in Costa Rica Director, Spring Break Programs

Karla Carballo headshot.

Karla Carballo

¡Hola! My name is Karla Carballo and I am very glad for your interest in being part of AIFS Abroad and our “pura vida” lifestyle in Costa Rica. As a study abroad student by the age of 15 while in France, I understood from first-hand the value of this experience, the importance of the quality and uniqueness of the program. International education has become a passion in my life and being part of the students’ personal and academic growth is a real honor; and for this reason, we pursue excellence.

My professional training in Psychology has been a wonderful complement to provide support to international students when facing the challenges of living abroad. You can always count on us for support, guidance, and of course…ideas to enjoy your adventure in Costa Rica.

I hope you all have an unforgettable life-changing experience with us.

The Program Director provides academic advice, introduces you to the community and handles communication with the University.

Learning does not begin or end in the classroom. To help you get a true taste of Central American culture, a selection of cultural activities and excursions are included in your program fee.

Both inside and outside the classroom students will have the opportunity to participate in a rich program of cultural activities organized by the university and the AIFS Abroad Program Director. There is always something going on and something to do. Activities may include:

  • Welcome lunch
  • Tours in and around San José
  • Farewell dinner

Please note that students may need to pay a small additional fee for some of the activities above.

Excursions

Once class has finished, we’ll whisk you away for 24 hours to relax and have fun with your classmates:

Arenal Hot Springs Spa and Ziplining Adventure

After a busy week escape the city to spend the night in Arenal where you can relax in the Hot Springs, and enjoy a zip-line adventure. Includes round-trip transportation, hotel accommodations, breakfast and group meal.

Cultural Resources

One of the best things you can do before departure is enter into the journey knowing that your time abroad will be unique to this experience. The resources, community, and support available to you when abroad will likely be different as well. In order to help you prepare for your experience, we have compiled the General Cultural Resources and Site Specific Cultural Resources for you to review. Your program staff will also provide you with more details during pre-departure and orientation.

Academics

AIFS Abroad offers a unique global educational experience for students on this program, with the following academic options available:

University of the Arts London (UAL) comprises six renowned colleges. It has a world-class reputation for innovation in art and design. With over 200,000 alumni all over the world, UAL is a global creative community like no other. The university has been the launchpad for the careers of many creative leaders who have gone on to help shape culture in the arts, design, fashion, communication, media and performance. The specialized teaching staff at UAL is made up of professional artists, designers, critics, and theorists. By studying under their guidance, students will follow in the footsteps of many pioneers in creative fields.

Central Saint Martins (CSM) is one of the six colleges that make up the University of the Arts London. Located in King’s Cross and Archway, CSM is known for its experimental and interdisciplinary design ideals and is often ranked as the top fashion school in London. Students are encouraged to collaborate across the school, using fashion and design to creatively address global challenges. The college has premiere design facilities including fashion studios for pattern cutting and garment construction; a knit workshop; a weave workshop with looms; digital labs and maker spaces; and a museum and gallery housing famous fashion and design artifacts.

Students applying to this Advanced Fashion Design semester are required to submit a portfolio of 20-25 images as part of the application. The AIFS Abroad Program Advisor will provide details about this requirement after you start your application.

Students who successfully complete a study abroad program at University of the Arts London are eligible for a 20% discount on a future postgraduate degree program at UAL.

Advanced Fashion Design

This semester program is designed specifically to expose visiting students to the experimental avant-garde fashion design and research approaches used at Central Saint Martins, which influence the wider London fashion design scene. CSM instructors are practicing designers, artists and fashion communicators who have deep ties to the London and global fashion and design industry. This curated curriculum emphasizes creativity, encouraging boundary pushing design ideas while helping students understand the context that culture provides fashion.

All Advanced Fashion Design students take three mandatory courses focused on culture and creativity in London, three core courses focused on fashion design, and electives focused on fashion biomaterials or fashion Jewelry. Students must enroll in 12-16 UAL credits. Courses vary in credit value from 1 – 3 credits, depending on the course. CSM advises that their fashion design courses are equivalent to 300 level courses in the US.

UAL Halls of Residence cater to art and design students and have studio workshop space as well as an art gallery.

AIFS Abroad in London Director, Academic Year and Semester Programs

Heather Lees

Heather Lees

My love of travel began at an early age from moving around to different U.S. Naval bases and family road trips, to visiting family in the Philippines and studying abroad in the UK and Shanghai, China. After graduating from university in the U.S., I began a career in higher education, starting out in Residence Life and student activities before transitioning into international education. I have lived in the UK, on and off, for nearly 14 years (I am eligible for British citizenship!) and love to highlight all the UK has to offer. While I am mostly found indoors baking and crocheting, some of my favourite trips with students have been to national parks here in the UK… from ghyll scrambling in the Lake District to kayaking in the Brecon Beacons. I am a Mental Health First Aider and always happy to lend an ear.

The Program Director provides academic advice, introduces you to the community and handles communication with the University.

AIFS Abroad staff arrange a rich variety of activities to introduce students to life in the United Kingdom. There is an additional fee for many of these activities, but they offer an inexpensive way to experience London’s exciting cultural life and to see other parts of Britain. Professional guides escort trips to enhance the educational experience. Past events have included:

  • Black London, Rock Music, Street Art and Royal London walking tours
  • Rugby and soccer matches
  • Day trips such as Bath, Stratford-upon-Avon and Brighton
  • River boat cruise along the Thames
  • Theater performances of WickedPhantom of the OperaLes Misérables, and The Woman in Black
  • Ballet performance of Cinderella
  • Traditional afternoon tea

You may be asked to pay a small additional fee for some of the activities above.

Besides arranged activities, there is always a wide range of events taking place in and around London, concerts, theater in the parks and much, much more. Information on these events will be made available to students upon arrival in London.

University of the Arts London prides itself on the variety and quality of its facilities, from state-of-the-art design suites to traditional print studios. Students can access the libraries, Learning Zones, cafés, shops and galleries at any of UAL’s sites, as long as they can show their ID card.

Excursions

This program offers a range of day trips and excursions that will take you outside London and deepen your social, historical and cultural understanding of the UK.
