We will follow the development of Prussia from a small duchy beyond the Eastern periphery of the Holy Roman Empire to one of the most powerful kingdoms at the center of Europe. But there is another, less tragic story that can also be told about Prussia: One of enlightened culture, of world-renowned education and universities, of state modernization and democratic rights that resonates until today. Between K\u00f6nigsberg, Potsdam and Berlin a particular worldview took shape that was both distinctly Prussian, German and cosmopolitan. The focus will be on the key issues of memory \u2013 especially that of WWII \u2013 and collecting practices \u2013 how did certain objects find their way here? How are such histories displayed and transmitted today? These are the questions that we will address as we explore the museums as dynamic fields that can inform our understanding of how Berlin presents itself both inwardly (in smaller city museums) and outwardly in larger, world-famous museums.  This course is anthropologically inflected and treats the sites as field sites to be explored empirically and analyzed critically. In a second step in the course will discuss the shifting aims and institutional paradigms of education in Europe and the United States since the 20th century.  Here, the emergence of the knowledge relationship between Berlin and New York will serve as a comparative case study in explaining the forms, functions and resources of knowledge production in the contemporary global city. This discussion will be accompanied by investigating public and private education institutions in Berlin in terms of their impact on the politics, economy and culture of the city.
