credit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Computer access and email<\/strong> There are many computer facilities for students on campus. Local AIFS staff will provide any assistance required including help and advice on a wide range of topics relating to the Computer Center which will help students benefit fully from information technology while studying at Maynooth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ECTS<\/strong> Maynooth University awards ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits. The number of ECTS credits will be shown on the transcript to allow each student\u2019s home institution the ultimate decision in the awarding of U.S. credit. Recommended U.S. semester credits next to each course description are based on 15 classroom hours per semester credit and are not a conversion of ECTS credits. Students should consult with their university advisors prior to participating in the program to have course credit pre-approved and ensure that they are taking the appropriate amount of credits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Library<\/strong> The library contains over 450,000 books and eBooks and more than 42,000 electronic journals. The library also provides a range of information skills and training courses to enable students to identify, obtain, evaluate and use information efficiently, effectively and ethically. The library has many computers for student use, self-service photocopying and also provides laptops and Kindles, which can be requested at the main desk. The staff are extremely helpful and are available to assist with any queries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Textbooks<\/strong> Students should budget around \u20ac60 for textbooks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grades<\/strong> No AIFS participant is permitted to take a course without receiving a grade. In the popular imaginary, Ireland continues to conjure up images of a timeless, mystical landscape, rural animal husbandry and simple, chronically alcoholic folk. Ireland has had to contend with this image for centuries, yet its culture and people have been constantly shaped and defined by global forces, from initial contacts with continental invaders, to English colonization, and contemporary stereotypes. Over the course of this module, students will be introduced to these numerous styles which include Baroque, Rococo, Neo- Classicism, Romanticism, Historicism, Naturalism, Arts &amp; Crafts and Neo-Celticism. Each lecture will identify the interpretation by Irish artists and designers of these important stylistic movements. During those decades Irish writers made a significant contribution to both Irish literature and world literature. In this course we will discuss a number of exemplary works from this period, beginning with the founding of the Abbey Theatre in 1904 and some of the plays produced there. We will then explore the poetry of W.B Yeats, paying attention to the different stages in his writing career and his evolving poetic engagement with Ireland and modernity. Finally, we will examine two works by James Joyce, his short story \u2018The Dead\u2019 and his first novel, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Throughout we will be exploring the complex relationship between literature, culture and politics in this formative period of Irish history. AIFS Abroad students must make special arrangements to transfer credits, but since AIFS Abroad courses are given at recognized universities or the AIFS Abroad Centers (which are transcripted by Fairfield University), there usually is no difficulty in arranging transfer credit toward U.S. degrees provided the proper procedure is followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n\t<div class=\"block-card\">\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\t<div class=\"block-card__content\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-european-credit-transfer-system-ects\">European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the European institutions that AIFS Abroad works with award credits under the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
