It will introduce major art styles and personalities in Czech modern art (from Art Nouveau’s Alphonse Mucha and the pioneer of abstraction František Kupka, to the unique phenomena of Czech Cubism and Surrealism all the way to the contemporary provocations of David Cerný). Deep changes that occurred in architecture (from Art Nouveau decoration through Functionalist utopia to deconstruction of Postmodernism) will be introduced and discussed. All artworks will be examined within their broader cultural and historical context. Students will be given the opportunity to visit many Prague galleries and museums to encounter and study the originals in detail.

History Shapes Music, Music Shapes History
                         (3 credits)

Course Code: Art 315

Instruction Language: English

Music is always rooted in its era. History shapes what music sounds like, how it is composed and how it is listened to. But that is not the end of the story. Music can also shape history. It can contribute to major changes in society. It is not only an expression of individual and social identities, it can also give rise to these identities. This interdisciplinary course will focus on the mutual influence of music and history, highlighting the cases where music really made a difference. These examples provide a unique insight into Central European society, culture and history from the 18th century to the present day. They also present an opportunity to discuss more general issues in aesthetics, sociology, history and culture studies. Themes covered will include the National Revival, modernism and the First Republic, music during and after WWII, Czech underground and the Velvet Revolution, capitalism and the culture industry, and others. The classes will consist of interpreting short excerpts from various texts on music, discussion, listening to musical samples, and field trips. Students will be introduced to major Czech and Central European classical composers as well as popular and alternative/underground music groups. No prior musical education is required. Guest lecturers will also be invited to the course, such as contemporary composer Miloš Orson Štedron.

                         The Edges of Photography
                         (3 credits)

Course Code: Art 324

Instruction Language: English

Although photography is a regular art discipline, due to its broad accessibility, it is perceived by many as a mere technical tool to record reality. Such perception is unsubstantiated on so many levels! The technical aspect of photography is only one part of it. The other, and perhaps even more important is the artistic part: Photographic technology can be seen as a tool in the service of a creative human soul. In addition, both these elements also correspond with and reflect a particular historical timeframe, which has an impact on the overall purport of every single image. This is certainly true about documentary photography, in which the seemingly ‘trivial’ photographer’s choices (such as camera exposure settings, framing/cropping, angles, focal length, composition, depth of field, etc.) have an impact on the outcome and perception of the photograph. It’s even more evident in abstract photography, in which reality/real objects are only used as mere creative tools for self-expression, a parable, a metaphor, a visual story. This course is designed to challenge students both academically and intellectually in its theoretical and philosophical parts. It is also conceived as a rather passionate invitation to a collective exploration of and adventure in photography as an art form. It combines theoretical aspects of photography, its aesthetic and cognitive values with practical exercises. Several outdoor activities make an integral part of the course in order to improve students’ individual skills in artistic self-expression. The focus is also on styles, different views of reality, how photography as an exquisite artistic medium expresses (or at times suppresses) the individual bias, aesthetics, period style, and the societal and cultural boundaries. The course will also examine the age-old debate about the documentary versus artistic value of photography, and similarly the argument on the nude arts versus soft pornography. Through students’ presentations, the course also offers a look into the history of Czech(oslovak) photography.

Cultural Studies

Czech Cultural Studies: Official and Unofficial Czech Cultures in the Second
                         (3 credits)

Course Code: Culture 309

Instruction Language: English

The main objective of this course is to discuss and trace the intricate relation among culture, politics and society in the region of Central and Eastern Europe by delving specifically into Czech multilayered cultural expression in the second half of the 20th century: from the works of art sanctioned by the communist regime to those marginalized by it or born in the exile. While we will primarily focus on the manifestations and significance of Czech official and unofficial cultures in a totalitarian society, we will also inquire into what the social and cultural legacy of these expressions has been after the transition to democracy, and how they are reflected in contemporary cultural and intellectual discourse today. The course will examine these issues in a transversal, multi-disciplinary way. In addition to traditional lecturing and required readings, we will also watch films and documentaries from and about the period, analyze independent photographs and propaganda posters, listen to pro-and anti-communist songs and read works of fiction written and distributed in spite of tough regime censorship. Where appropriate, we will take site visits within Prague to take advantage of persons, events or institutions that might enhance students’ understanding of the course, i.e. Libri Prohibiti Library; Václav Havel library; The Institute for Studying Totalitarian Regimes, Hotel Internacional, etc.

Czech Language

                         Czech Language for Everyday Life
                         (3 credits)

Course Code: Czech 102

Instruction Language: English

The course lays stress on the productive skills of speaking. It explores interactions between the state and markets in different technological and institutional environments. The course analyses historical and contemporary issues in the global economic order from a theoretical and applied perspective. The course provides a comparative overview of past economic crises. Also, it covers the most important economic policies of states from the historical perspective to demonstrate their origin and significant lessons learned from their application. The role of different stages of globalisation is discussed to cover the evolution of the institutional and technological environment in which the crises occurred. The last part of the course provides a local insight into the topics discussed in the previous parts from the perspective of the European (eurozone) economies.

Film Studies

Fear, Faith and Hope: The Depiction of the Jews in Film
                         (3 credits)

Course Code: Film 376

Instruction Language: English

The goal of this interdisciplinary course is to enable students to draw connections between the historical events of the cruel 20th century and cinematography. We will learn to observe and understand how complicated the reactions of a human being facing dangerous life-threatening situations can be and how every individual deals with such a threat in a different way. The screened films often pose unpleasant questions focusing on human identity and integrity, cowardice and heroism, wickedness and pride, greed and generosity. Most of the screened films are shot by outstanding Central European filmmakers (Czechs, Slovaks, Hungarians, Poles) and often have a very different view on the human existence of those brutal times than one would find in US film production. In the films, we are facing not only victims (in our case the Jewish population), but also so-called ordinary people who are burdened by history. Those who have not chosen the times they live in and unfortunately often have to make life-or-death decisions under a totalitarian system. The lecture and seminar will deal primarily with the Nazi totalitarian system, but will touch upon the Communist one as well. About one-third of the screened films will cover the internationally known Czech New Wave in Cinema of the 1960s but we will also watch a few contemporary films on the topic. Although the course does not include much of film theory, students will learn not only historical facts, but also how to read a film. Screening will take place on a large screen in class, thus enabling the viewers to share a common experience.

History

Construction of the Czech National Identity and its Symbols
                         (3 credits)

Course Code: History/Art 351

Instruction Language: English

The course is focusing on the construction of Czech national identity during the 19th and 20th centuries. Although the Czech national awakening started first at the beginning of the 19th century, it used symbols and references throughout all the historical eras of Czech lands starting with the early medieval times. The course will follow the roots of Czech national consciousness from the first ruling dynasty, through the Gothic, renaissance, and Baroque times until the foundation of Czechoslovakia and its history in the 20th century. Special attention will be dedicated to the symbols and symbolical places, which were used during the creation of Czech national revival as patterns of Czech national identity (e.g. Slavín cemetery, National Museum, National Theatre, Municipal house, the monument of Battle of White Mountain, National Memorial on the Vítkov Hill). By visiting these symbolic places the students will be able to see, what kind of national symbols were used and in which way. The course will be divided into two parts: the first one will be theoretical, in order to outline the topic and background of the lecture. Secondly, there will follow field trips to one of the museums/memorials, where the different problems will be discussed more precisely.

Cultural Histories of Late State Socialism and Postsocialism
                         (3 credits)

Course Code: History 409

Instruction Language: English

The course provides critical insights into contemporary cultural history of Central Eastern and South Eastern Europe (CEE and SEE). The course covers all the stages of Jewish presence in these parts of Europe equally, starting with the emergence of the Jewish settlement in Central Europe in the Middle Ages, proceeding to the modern period, with a special emphasis on the ideological and political context leading to the horrors of the Holocaust, and concluding the course with a full coverage of the post-Holocaust era and the contemporary situation of Jewish communities in the European Union and elsewhere in Europe. One of the goals pursued in this course is to make the students aware of the uniqueness of the Ashkenazi culture, its identity, religious tradition, and literature. At the same time, however, the students will be led to perceive this uniqueness embedded in a larger picture of the variety of the Jewish diaspora groups whose common identity has been glued together by religious traditions and collective memory the origin of which goes back to Antiquity.

Literature

20th Century Prague Literature in International Contexts
                         (3 credits)

Course Code: Literature 310

Instruction Language: English

The course aims to cover selected chapters of 20th-century Czech literature as part of the Central- and East-European and Anglo-American contexts, presenting Prague and the literature produced here at the crossroads of multiple languages, traditions, poetic and aesthetic systems. The canonical Czech-writing authors include, among others, Jaroslav Hašek, Karel Capek, the poetist poets (Nezval, Seifert, Biebl), Bohumil Hrabal, Milan Kundera, Josef Škvorecký, Ivan Blatný, & Václav Havel. The international context is provided by German-writing authors such as Gustav Meyrink, Franz Kafka, & Robert Musil, by the Russian writers Vladimir Mayakovsky, Mikhail Bulgakov & Marina Tsvetayeva, as well as the many French and Anglophone poets writing in/about Prague. The seminar will conclude with an overview of the post-1989 situation, where Prague literature has once again become the locus of lively international exchange and prominent Czech or Prague-based writers (Jáchym Topol, Michal Ajvaz, Tom Stoppard, Tom McCarthy, & Louis Armand) have re-entered into dialogue with other traditions and languages. Discussion of the literary texts is complemented by their historical/theoretical backgrounds, provided by the work of Gilles Deleuze & Félix Guattari, Martin Esslin, Sigmund Freud, Angelo Maria Ripellino, et al.

                         Interpretation of European Fairytales
                         (3 credits)

Course Code: Literature 304

Instruction Language: English

Fairytales are a significant part of culture which has been attracting attention of various fields of knowledge. Through their variety, diversity and colourfulness you can observe diversity and colourfulness of the world whereas their specifities and pecularities show distinction and specific nature of particular countries, peoples and cultures. This course first seeks to introduce the area of European fairytales as a genre within its broader historical, geographical, and cultural context, in relation to other European folk genres as myth or legends, with a closer focus on Czech fairytales and their specifics. The main goal of the course is to show fairytales as symbolic narratives bringing a lot of information about the world around us as well as about ourselves. There are various theories searching for the disguised symbolical meanings of European fairytales and the significance which they contain and refer to. While folklorists have been trying to organize and classify fairytales, psychologists, literary critics and other scholars have been trying to interpret them: to find out which messages, recomendations or other information they bring – about society, its rules, customs or beliefs but also about human wishes, desires or visions. The course will describe and survey the changes in the approach to European fairytales within the development of scholarship about them. It presents sociohistorical, psychological or anthropological interpretations, as well as biologically based and gender or feminist methods of their interpretation. It touches upon the topics like ethical or moral principles in fairytales, gender and social roles, or historical and political influences to fairytale adaptation.

Political Science

Comparative Politics: Transformations of Central Europe
                         (3 credits)

Course Code: Politics 315

Instruction Language: English

More than ever before, Europe is standing at the crossroads. Multiple crises in the EU and beyond (financial crisis, refugee crisis, Russia-Ukraine geopolitical crisis, Brexit crisis) have had vast impact on Central Europe which is a “natural mirror” of the above-mentioned European crossroads, reflecting both West-East and North-South structural divisions. Sharing the same geopolitical position within the East Bloc, the individual cases – i.e. Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary and others – differed significantly, however, in their respective points of departure, as well as in political institutional solutions chosen in course of their transitions. This comparative aspect will be studied with special focus. Students will be also encouraged to challenge the mainstream understanding of “transition” as a predictable, gradual and irreversible progress towards the standard “Western” model. Despite being subjected to intense assimilation policies and persecution, they regularly re-emerge with a remarkable revitalizing power. Who are then the Roma and Gypsies, what does it mean from their point of view? As a people without a state and the largest European minority they are the epitome of cultural diversity across borders and time. In this course, we will learn about the historical social adaptations of Roma and Gypsy groups in Europe and the United States and then we will focus on Central European Roma. The course will draw on the latest research on topics such as Romani European migration, memory building, political mobilization, survival strategies, segregation and racism, Romani women activism or youth movement. The course newly adopts a field-trip component that will complement the lecture and seminar sessions. We will visit a contested memory site of Nazi persecution and participate at a commemoration ritual; we will travel to a Roma ghetto and study the contours of spatial segregation and its politics; we will attend a performance of the “theater of the oppressed” and discuss with Roma actors how theatric language helps them express their aspirations etc. This course will challenge mono-causal explanations of Romani society and culture and will stimulate students to think about Roma in a critical holistic way that brings into consideration the societies they live in. Building on a diverse selection of empirical material, ranging from ethnographic, historical and sociological case studies to film and art, the course will present the Roma “as good to think with” about contemporary societies.

                         Czech Republic: Urban Perspective
                         (3 credits)

Course Code: Sociology 357

Instruction Language: English

The aim of the course is combining knowledge from the fields of urban sociology, general sociology and urbanism in order to give students detailed insight into Czech urban situation. At the end of the course, they 1) will have a basic introduction to the field of urban sociology; 2) will be to understand how cities work from the sociological perspective and 2) will have information and knowledge about Czech cities that will help them to benefit from their time here in CR. In the second part of the semester 1) a short, commented film trip to smaller town or Prague is planned; 2) if possible, a talk in class given by an urban professional (i.e. planner) and 3) students’ presentation focused on the comparison of the cities of their origin and Prague. In this course, we shall explore the response and reactions of both “sides” of the dialogue.

                         Sociology of Food
                         (3 credits)

Course Code: Sociology 300

Instruction Language: English

Eating is a natural necessity for almost all human beings. Food, however, does more than just help humans survive and grow. It can become a political tool, a marker of social class and gender, a mirror of significant cultural differences. On a more individual scale, it can be related to personal identity, habits, and health. As our perspective in this course is sociological and semiotical, we shall look at food both as a source of embodied experience, and as a language that can be decoded. It is a symbolic system that reflects the everyday habits of humans, norms of societies, as well as deeper, 11 internalized meanings. Food will thus become a lens through which we will see and analyze our different cultures in a new light. We will ask questions such as: What is the place of origin of our food? How did our food get to us? How does food configure and change relations among people? During our comparisons and practical workshops, we shall trace the histories of some of the most significant meals of the Czech Republic (and former Austro-Hungarian empire). Their transformations will help us understand the social changes that took place in Central Europe from a different perspective. Questions such as gender relations, families, political economy, health (obesity, anorexia, bio food), ecology and the nation-state will be discussed. We will read academic articles that react on these questions in various national and ethnic contexts. There will be workshops where students will try to cook a Central European meal and discuss it with a Czech chef, as well a field trip to the local Beer Brewery to learn about the process of beer making and the cultural aspect of its local consumption.

Sports Course

Each semester the Department of Physical Education at the Faculty of Arts offers students the opportunity to take a 1-credit sports course alongside local Czech students.
