As one of three mandatory units, you will meet and engage with all students across the UAL Study Abroad programme from CSM, LCC and LCF to build networks, and creative communities.  In this project you will orientate yourselves in small teams, to collaborate and develop your proposition and presentation skills. In pairs you will pitch a speculative exhibition proposal delivered as a Pecha Kucha visual presentation.  By being an active researcher, acknowledging what has come before you, you will explore and examine a wide cross section of relevant and \/ or unexpected areas of interest. This will eventually act as the foundation of this unit, to make positive and impactful social change.  You will participate in a series of online lectures as well as guided visits, exhibitions in museums and art galleries around London, cultural centres and dynamic geographic landmarks each week. You will note take, annotate, and sketch in a research journal to document ideas and contextualise what creativity and culture means to you. This sketchbook will also connect to your London Cultural Studies research. Being critical is key. During this project you will research key concepts, debates and terminology related to contemporary visual cultures, values of perception and the luxury consumer industries. You may focus on any creative sector, product, or area, i.e., fashion, perfume, cars, yacht, sportswear, technology, hotels, coffee, chocolate, champagne etc that you can critically analyse and bring debate around one of these four key themes:  Luxury Narratives Sustainable Narratives Representing Diverse Narratives Global Narratives At all times, you are encouraged to think critically, researching aspects (sometimes controversial, and provocative) of consumerism from European \/ Global North\/South social contexts, examining a variety of different ideals and philosophies as you approach theory and interpretation from, but not limited to:  Taste and consumption. Impact of mass culture. Gender, identity. Ethnicity, heritage. Class, socioeconomics. Climate \u2013 sustainability, and regeneration and more.  In small groups you will devise a speculative elevator pitch where you have a short amount of time to convince a magazine editor to publish your findings in their upcoming publication. Through lectures, discussions, demonstrations, practical workshops and shoots you will closely examine the relationship between theoretical approaches and realistically achievable goals. You will consider what type of digital camera to use and why, learn what setting combinations mean and which are best to shoot with, acquire an understanding of terminology, and become familiar with the technology and programmes needed for digital image capturing. Understanding the role of the photographer\/director on a shoot is key to this unit. Topics also covered will include how to recognize the potential of available light, the set up and manipulation of studio lighting, appropriate use of movement, the importance of styling, and recognizing technical errors and how to fix them. This class is for those who are serious about this subject and want to know more about becoming a photographer\/film maker or working with fashion imagery in the future. AIFS Abroad students must make special arrangements to transfer credits, but since AIFS Abroad courses are given at recognized universities or the AIFS Abroad Centers (which are transcripted by Fairfield University), there usually is no difficulty in arranging transfer credit toward U.S. degrees provided the proper procedure is followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n\t<div class=\"block-card\">\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\t<div class=\"block-card__content\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-european-credit-transfer-system-ects\">European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the European institutions that AIFS Abroad works with award credits under the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). ECTS enables cooperating institutions to measure and compare a student\u2019s performance and facilitates the transfer of credits from the European institution to the U.S institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n\t<div class=\"block-card\">\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\t<div class=\"block-card__content\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-common-european-framework-of-reference-cefr\">Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Language levels are defined according to the CEFR and will be listed on your transcript on completion of the program. CEFR organizes language proficiency into six levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) which can be regrouped into three broad levels according to the needs of the local institution: Beginner: A1, A2\/U.S. Level 100; Intermediate: B1, B2\/U.S. Level 200-300; Advanced: C1, C2\/U.S. Level 400<\/p>\n\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n\t<div class=\"block-card\">\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\t<div class=\"block-card__content\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-transcripts\">Transcripts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you complete your program, an official transcript is sent to your home institution directly from&nbsp;AIFS Abroad or the host university.&nbsp;Another official transcript may be retained by&nbsp;AIFS Abroad in Stamford, but this is not the case for all programs. Please contact&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:transcripts@aifs.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transcripts@aifs.com<\/a>&nbsp;to find out how to request additional transcripts.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Generally, your school should receive your transcript&nbsp;60 days after completion of the program.&nbsp;(Cannes Semester programs,&nbsp;Perth, Sydney, Dublin, Limerick, and Wellington&nbsp;Programs&nbsp;exception: Transcripts issued&nbsp;and retained&nbsp;by&nbsp;the host&nbsp;universities. Transcripts for the Cannes Semester programs are issued by Chapman University.)<br>&nbsp;<br>Transcripts may come without an English-language translation, so participants will need to organize translations with their home university.<\/p>\n\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n\t<div class=\"block-card\">\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\t<div class=\"block-card__content\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-academic-records\">Academic Records<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Credit assessment methods in overseas universities may not be comparable to those in U.S. universities. Grading may involve exams, papers, individual projects, class discussion or some combination of these. Although academic institutions abroad may grade on a variety of scales, admissions counselors and registrars at U.S. institutions are familiar with international grading systems and can convert grades.<\/p>\n\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n\t<div class=\"block-card\">\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\t<div class=\"block-card__content\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-course-selection\">Course Selection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AIFS Abroad Program Advisors are available to assist you in the process. The following procedure is recommended:<br><br>Read course descriptions for the selected program and select courses. Obtain approval from your academic or study abroad advisor for the preliminary courses selected. Final approval of credit transfer for completed courses is at the discretion of the Registrar or appropriate official at the home institution.
