The course will travel through the hidden geography of the so-called Afrikanisches Viertel in Wedding and focus on issues around public space, monuments, and street names from the 1960s to the present day that have anchored German colonialism. We will consider the relationship between colonialism and white supremacy in Germany, whilst examining the ongoing debate around how German (Anti-) racism has been influenced by earlier colonial ideology and practice. We will turn to the resurgence of colonialism as a theme in recent literature and historiography. Africa, in all of its cultural prosperity and diversity, remains alive in the receiving societies as the various ethnic groups created new cultures and recreated their old ways as much as circumstances allowed. Students are encouraged to critically analyze these representations with the intentional notion of undoing \u2013 unlearning within larger theoretical frameworks of the (in) visibility of the African diaspora in Berlin. In concrete terms, the seminar contextualizes, focuses, and specializes in the history of exhibitions in Berlin related to the HIV\/AIDS pandemic from 1981 to the present day. The course involves visiting Berlin\u2019s institutions and archives. The class provides conversations with Berlin-based curators and artists. It allows students to explore and understand the contemporary curatorial practice of the city by visiting and analyzing different exhibitions in Berlin. The course is ideal for future researchers and cultural workers who want to explore the work of curatorial research and exhibition-making. The basics of the conjugation of verbs and the usage of articles in the German language are the subject of this course at A1 level. You will learn to introduce yourself and to form simple sentence constructions. A focus is placed on oral language skills, which are developed through interactive working methods. Topics related to German regional studies are also integrated into the course. The course is held in German. Prior knowledge in German is not required. Grammar may be explained in English where necessary. We will work with a lot with pictures, audios, a German book and useful exercises. Everyday situations will be practiced. Fortunately, these practices are now seen as an archaic practice of the past. Yet, the colonial legacy is still present in the European cultural sphere. This course aims to trace and deconstruct such colonial legacies using the case studies of European and, particularly, German cultural institutions and practices. At the end of the course, students should be able to provide an answer to the question of how we can identify and solve injustices in and through cultural heritage in Europe. The course is divided into two parts. The first four weeks are devoted to laying down the theoretical foundations of decolonial studies with special attention to indigenous knowledge and practices. During the following nine weeks, these theories are tested and put into practice with different manifestations of cultural heritage in Europe, such as ethnographic objects, public monuments, human remains and underwater heritage, among others. In such a scenario, the parties have to litigate before the domestic court of a State. This raises a number of difficult issues, a selection of which will be dealt with in the course, primarily from a European (EU) and from a US perspective. One part of the course will be devoted to the issue of international jurisdiction: In which state\u2019s courts can the plaintiff bring his lawsuit against the defendant? It will provide students with a theoretically informed understanding of Germany and its role as a regional and global actor. Apart from the institutional framework of the EU, the course examines the different tools through which the member-states pursue their external relations. At the end of the course, students should have strong research foundations on how to use the heuristic theoretical concepts of multipolarity, structural power, hegemony, or regional governance\/leadership. How does the digital age challenge questions regarding privacy, individuality and freedom? When does surveillance as care tip over into surveillance as control? And how does the Stasi system of vigilance prefigure contemporary surveillance culture? This course will on the one hand examine the impact of surveillance on society by looking at the multifaceted ways technologies, societies and the arts interact and, on the other hand, reflect on surveillance in a totalitarian context while comparing observation techniques in the GDR with contemporary surveillance methods. The course further encourages students to critically engage with the representation of surveillance in contemporary literature, film and popular culture and maps out important themes with regards to surveillance and its repercussions (e.g. visibility, identity, privacy and control). Furthermore, the course provides an overview of the interdisciplinary field of surveillance studies and covers the latest research in the following major areas: 1. Relationship between surveillance, power and social control; 2. Histories of Surveillance: GDR and the Stasi (especially in the context of Berlin); 3. The concept of privacy; 4. AIFS Abroad students must make special arrangements to transfer credits, but since AIFS Abroad courses are given at recognized universities or the AIFS Abroad Centers (which are transcripted by Fairfield University), there usually is no difficulty in arranging transfer credit toward U.S. degrees provided the proper procedure is followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n\t<div class=\"block-card\">\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\t<div class=\"block-card__content\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-european-credit-transfer-system-ects\">European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the European institutions that AIFS Abroad works with award credits under the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). ECTS enables cooperating institutions to measure and compare a student\u2019s performance and facilitates the transfer of credits from the European institution to the U.S institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n\t<div class=\"block-card\">\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\t<div class=\"block-card__content\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-common-european-framework-of-reference-cefr\">Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Language levels are defined according to the CEFR and will be listed on your transcript on completion of the program. CEFR organizes language proficiency into six levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) which can be regrouped into three broad levels according to the needs of the local institution: Beginner: A1, A2\/U.S. Level 100; Intermediate: B1, B2\/U.S. Level 200-300; Advanced: C1, C2\/U.S. Level 400<\/p>\n\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n\t<div class=\"block-card\">\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\t<div class=\"block-card__content\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-transcripts\">Transcripts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you complete your program, an official transcript is sent to your home institution directly from&nbsp;AIFS Abroad or the host university.&nbsp;Another official transcript may be retained by&nbsp;AIFS Abroad in Stamford, but this is not the case for all programs. Please contact&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:transcripts@aifs.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transcripts@aifs.com<\/a>&nbsp;to find out how to request additional transcripts.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Generally, your school should receive your transcript&nbsp;60 days after completion of the program.&nbsp;(Cannes Semester programs,&nbsp;Perth, Sydney, Dublin, Limerick, and Wellington&nbsp;Programs&nbsp;exception: Transcripts issued&nbsp;and retained&nbsp;by&nbsp;the host&nbsp;universities.
